The White Mirror: The painting of Anna Papamarkaki Evans
Christoforos Marinos, art historian and curator
An architecture taking shape gradually over time.
Marinos opens with one question: how does abstraction work today? He sets her paintings beside a Paul Klee from 1937. Klee builds a clear structure. Hers loosens, fades and retreats, and each canvas is built again and again in layers.
He follows what she does at the surface: relief, scrapes, erasures, traces from cleaning a brush. He also follows the poems her works grow from, and reads the whole as an understated lyricism.
